I considered several principles of social justice education in choosing the following resources. The following are intended to challenge teachers' thinking and not to provide data and information for lessons. The resources linked here are meant to inspire teachers to broaden their understanding of teaching mathematics for social justice. For specific resources dedicated to specific topics, see "Topics".
Resources selected here must align with the principles of promoting fairness, equity, and inclusivity. They critically examine and challenge power structures in society and math, and address issues of gender, race, and other biases. The resources I have selected have a real-world impact, and demonstrate the relevance and applicability of math concepts to addressing real societal change. Finally, these resources encourage and inspire empowerment of teachers and students to view math as a tool for social change. I hope that the resources below encourage active participation in addressing social inequity.
Data Feminism (2020) by D'Ignazio and Klein served as the course textbook for the University of British Columbia course - EDCP 551 - Mathematics Education: Current Issues in the Winter 2023 semester. D'Ignazio and Klein critically challenge the gendered and biased practices in data collection and technology. D'Ignazio and Klein say that data is deeply entwined with societies established power structures. This book goes beyond a course textbook, and provides a map for responsible and inclusive use of data.
With Rethinking Mathematics, Gutstein has become a leading voice in the field of social justice mathematics education. This work offers strategies for teachers to connect mathematics to real-world issues. Gutstein argues for inclusivity and equity in math education and this work paves the way for a deep understanding of both in teachers' classrooms.
Nasir et al. recognize and build on the experiences and background of each student in Mathematics for Equity, and put forward a framework that focuses on inclusivity and community engagement. This piece of work inspires teachers to rethink their approach and empower their students to take up mathematics as a tool for social change.
